The 1956 Hungarian Uprising

50 years ago, Hungary very nearly shook off the yoke of communist rule and Soviet influence.

On 23 October 1956, a bunch of students started a demonstration which eventually turned into a nationwide uprising. The government fell. It was a revolution, but eventually was crushed by Soviet forces.

A month later at the Melbourne Olympics, a water polo match between the USSR and Hungary turned into a grudge match, which the Hungarian side won.

Many Hungarians fled and became refugees. 14,000 came to live in Australia.

.........ooooooooOOOOOOOOoooooooo..........

My human stayed home with me today. Woohoo! He had worked up enough hours to take today off work. Unfortunately he spent most of the day doing chores such as cleaning the floor and tidying up.

Thankfully he decided to join me for a quick power cat nap on the couch at midday (around 40 minutes). Also great was the nice long brush of my fur.
